With advances in healthcare, including the ability to keep someone artificially alive, Utah law recognizes that individuals should be able to choose their own end-of-life care. A competent adult can execute an Advanced Health Care Directive (also known as a Living Will) that dictates, upon incapacity, whether he or she wants life sustaining support, what kind of support, and who he or she wants to help make these decisions. The drafters of the law hope to ensure people can naturally die when they want with dignity and privacy.
